In my reading of the peer-reviewed articles by Stevenson and others in this area,[3] I have been favorably impressed by the care these researchers take to explore all the available evidence. They look not only at the data supporting the possibility of reincarnation but also at any data potentially invalidating their hypothesis.

In this chapter I will review evidence from the writings of Stevenson and other scientists in support of the concept of reincarnation—though Stevenson himself never speaks that baldly. He refers not to evidence “of reincarnation” or “in support of reincarnation” but to cases “suggestive of reincarnation.” Even with his careful wording and his adherence to scientific standards, Stevenson’s research has been largely ignored by other scientists. The American Medical Association, however, in a review of one of Stevenson’s books, wrote,

. . . [I]n regard to reincarnation he has painstakingly and unemotionally collected a detailed series of cases . . . in which the evidence is difficult to explain on any other grounds.[4]
